12.06.2002 Annual Report Of The Information Commissioner 2001
The Information Commissioner, Kevin Murphy, has today published his fourth Annual Report. The Information Commissioner holds office under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, 1997 and his main role is that of deciding appeals (technically termed "applications for review") made by people whose requests under the FOI Act have been refused or only partially granted. The Commissioner's other roles include the investigation of the FOI practices of public bodies, the promotion of good FOI practice and reviewing the operation of the FOI Act generally. At present the FOI Act applies to almost 350 public bodies, including all Government Departments and Offices, the health boards, the local authorities, publicly funded hospitals and health service providers as well as a wide range of other public bodies. During 2001, additional bodies were brought within the remit of the FOI Act, including FÁS, IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, and universities and third-level institutes of education.

The Information Commissioner, Kevin Murphy, today published his first Annual Report. Mr Murphy, who is also the Ombudsman, holds office as Information Commissioner under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act.
