Is there a decision relevant to your case?

On this website the Commissioner publishes decisions which may be of interest to people working in the area of FOI in Ireland and abroad, and to the general public. If you are considering applying to the Commissioner for review of a decision (of a public body), you may wish to search our decisions to see if the general subject matter has been dealt with previously. The Commissioner deals with the facts of each individual case on the evidence before her. While past decisions do not form precedents which are rigidly adhered to in every case they do provide valuable guidance on the Commissioner's approach to particular sections of the FOI Act.

You may search our decisions by public body (e.g. Department of Social and Family Affairs or Cork City Council); by section of the FOI Act (if you know it); as well as by date and case number.
