Annual Report 2008 - Text

Reviews of Decisions

During 2008, I reviewed 259 decisions of public bodies compared with 325 for 2007 and 292 for 2006. This decrease is accounted for by a number of reasons, including the complexity of some reviews and greater concentration by my Office on older and generally more time-consuming cases.

At the start of 2008, my Office had a total of 224 reviews on hand and a further 228 were accepted during 2008. Following the 259 reviews completed in 2008, a total of 193 reviews remained on hands at the end of the year. I am pleased that the large backlog of cases on hands continues to decrease and is now significantly less than the figure of 796 at the end of 2003. Despite the welcome trend of a reducing backlog, this issue has been and continues to be a major source of concern to me, and my Office is working on reducing the backlog even further in 2009.
