08.05.2003 Annual Report of the Information Commissioner, 2002
The Information Commissioner, Kevin Murphy, has today published his fifth Annual Report. This is his last Annual Report as Information Commissioner as he will retire on 1 June 2003 after five years in that Office and after eight years as Ombudsman. The Information Commissioner holds office under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, 1997 and his main role is that of deciding appeals (technically termed "applications for review") made by people whose requests under the FOI Act have been refused or only partially granted. The Commissioner's other roles include the investigation of the FOI practices of public bodies, the promotion of good FOI practice and reviewing the operation of the FOI Act generally.

In accordance with the provisions of the Ombudsman Act 1980 and the Freedom of Information Act, 1997, I have to-day asked Her Excellency, President Mary McAleese to relieve me of office as Ombudsman and office as Information Commissioner with effect from 1 June 2003.
